Mariana Matus

I am a computational biologist passionate about leveraging big data to improve human health. During my PhD at MIT, I specialized in the emerging field of wastewater epidemiology. Sewage is our collective microbiome. It can be analyzed with genomics and metabolomics to characterize the health of entire populations and stay ahead of infectious disease and drug abuse epidemics.

As cofounder of Biobot Analytics, I aim to build a wastewater epidemiology platform that informs public health practice around the world. We build the technology to generate health data from sewage accurately, and we make this novel type of data useful to public health and public safety officials. The first application of our platform is to monitor trends in the consumption of 30+ opioids and other drugs in cities across the U.S. and Canada.
